Hi everyone. Welcome to our first blog entry for the year! What a fantastic day we have had today. Green day at school is a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn a little about the environment, gardens and of course sustainability. Today we spent some time clearing our garden to make room for our bean plants, and the tomato seedlings that have sprouted up over the last few weeks. Hopefully the weather lasts long enough for these to become viable.
We also began to implement our class sustainability project. We are going to try to grow seedlings to supply other classes with, rather than purchasing these from a gardening outlet. We have planted silverbeet, lettuces and cabbage seeds in yoghurt containers (recycling at its best!). We are going to keep these in the shade shed and will have to keep an eye on them and make sure they get enough warmth, light and water. The children all participated today and got dirty which they all seemed to enjoy. Digging, weeding, planting, and watering were among our tasks today and the conversations the children were having were great to listen to. The water tanks and worm farms were well used, making our day truly a sustainable activity. We will post some photos soon.
